Question notes · before a visit

Bring your goal, not just a drug name.

Write what you want help with in everyday words. Then use the visit to ask whether a medicine fits that goal.

The myth

I need to pick the treatment before the visit.

An assessment comes before the choice

The health professional looking at your care needs is called a clinician.

As of September 26, 2026, Colorado Medical Board guidance says answers on an online form alone are not enough to decide on a prescription.

The Federation of State Medical Boards brings together state boards that oversee doctors. Its guidance says choosing a drug from an online list is not enough by itself for proper treatment. The group also advises that patients should be able to reach their clinician with questions that come up later.

The group gives advice to state boards; it does not make Colorado law.

Put your main concern into words

Try: “The problem I want help with is …” Note the things you tried before and the changes you want to see.

Keep a note of your medicines and the questions you want answered. Ask what records or test results the visit needs.

A brief note can be enough to begin the conversation. This note does not need the detail of a research paper.

Ask for an answer you can repeat back

“What is the medicine’s full name, and what use are we discussing?”

“What evidence applies to this exact product?” “What other choices fit my goal?”

“What could go wrong, and what would make this a poor fit for me?” “Who can I reach if a problem starts?”

“Which pharmacy prepares and sends it?” “What is the full bill, including repeat charges?”

Ask the prescriber to explain any unfamiliar word. Then repeat the plan to the prescriber using your own words.

The myth

The visit ends when a prescription is sent.

Make room for follow-up

Ask about the timing of plan reviews and the process for questions between visits.

National advice from the group of medical boards calls for the clinician to arrange any needed tests or an exam in person.

Ask who would arrange those tests or the visit in person.
